Whether you are new to Roman coin collecting or you have an interest in ancient history then you will find Ancient Roman coin collecting an interesting and affordable hobby. Ancient Rome was a vast civilization that spanned a long area and over a long period. As a result there are many Roman coins to choose from. You can buy roman silver coins, biblical coins, coins depicting constantine or Julius Ceasar or any of the other great emperors. Imagining holding in your hands a coin thousands of years old with a portrait of Julius ceasor on the front. A coin once held by thousands of people, perhaps even by some of the emperors themselves.
Buying Roman Coins on Ebay You can find some great bargains on ebay at lower prices then elsewhere. This is because most coin dealers usually have higher overhead costs than someone selling on eBay, and hence will have to sell for a bit more to cover the expenses. Also many private collectors will sell on ebay at bargain rates. Because ebay is an auction it is possible to win a bid for a low price and re-sell the item at a profit.
There is also a large and rich diversity of coins for sale on ebay and thousands being sold at any given time at all price ranges. I would recommend spending a bit more money and buying a coin that is well preserved such as many of the Roman silver coins. They are more likely to appreciate in value over the coming years and should make you more profit should you decide to resell them. The cheap roman coins are often very coroded and worn.
Genuine and Fake Roman Coins While most coins for sale on eBay are genuine occassionally you will find some forgeries and counterfeit copies. Not all counterfiet coins originate from sellers with a lower feedback score or dishonest sellers. Many ancient coins sold on ebay are sold by sellers who are not so aware of forgeries and some will un-intentionally sell a fake coin believing it to be genuine.
Also not all counterfeit coins sold on ebay originate from eastern Europe such as Bulgaria. These fake coins can be made anywhere and have been distributed widely.
If you are an experienced coin dealer you may be able to tell the fake coins from the real ones. If you are not then you should consider the following eBay listings tools shown below.
The eBay Seller Check below will tell you about a particulary eBay seller. Their feedback score, rating, date and location registered, whether the seller keeps their feedback private (an indication of someone selling fake items). It will also tell you whether they are on the coin sellers blacklist which contains sellers who have intentionally or un-intentionally sold fake coins on eBay. Please add to the database if you know of any eBay seller who has sold counterfiet coins, not just Ancient coins. I want this site to provide a place where coin buyers can purchase in confidence.
