Why Collect Roman Coins
Whether you are starting out with coin collecting,
you are already a modern coin collector or you just have an interest in ancient
history then you will find Ancient Roman coin collecting a fascinating and affordable
hobby.
Roman coin collecting is a tangible way of studying and getting close to history
and many people find it surprising that Roman coin collecting can be such an affordable
hobby. You may be unaware that Roman coins can be found almost as easily as modern
coins. The reason being is that many of the Roman coins were created in large numbers,
over a large period of time and over a large geographic area. Therefore many different
varieties exist ranging from the more common and cheap
Roman coins for sale on ebay to the rarer and more expensive Roman coins,
sometimes made out of gold that can sell for thousands of dollars. Also, there are
fewer collectors of ancient coins than of modern coins. This makes the demand for
them lower and makes them more affordable.
The great variation of Roman coins means you can vary the hobby to suite your budget,
your particular tastes and level of knowledge. Also Roman coin collecting does not
just have historical value but also artistic value, the coins being cleverly crafted
and telling a story of the time. If you’ve ever wondered what emperors like Nero,
Constantine, Julius Caesar looked like then look no further. The faces of numerous
emperors are displayed on these coins complete with inscriptions, some over 2000
years old. Imagine holding a coin in your hand this old that may have been held
by such historical figures.
Affordability of Roman Coins
Collecting Roman coins does not have to be an expensive hobby. There are many Roman
coins of reasonable quality issued under a number of emperors during the late 3rd
and 4th centuries AD that can sell for as little as $5.00 to $10.00.
For a little more money you can purchase coins that feature the more famous 1st
and 2nd century emperors, and many later ones in very nice condition. You could
even assemble a nice collection of more then half of the emperors in good condition
complete with readable legends and clear portraits for as little as $20 a coin.
There are also many varieties of coins for each emperor so there are numerous varieties
to choose from.
If you have a larger budget you can purchase the more scarce coins such as the Roman silver coins (Denarius)
or the Aureus which is a Roman Gold
coin. These should be in better shape and show more detail due to their
higher price. Unlike most coins today Roman Coins had intrinsic value being comprised
of precious metals such as Gold, Silver and Bronze being worth many times more then
their weight in these precious metals during Roman times.
If you have a very low budget you can also purchase
uncleaned roman coins that require careful cleaning. Sellers will often
claim that the uncleaned coins could contain expensive rare or gold coins. Occassionally
they do. Sometimes they are put there by the seller.
If you are just starting out as a Roman coin collector then purchasing uncleaned
Roman coins is very affordable . Just be aware that many of these uncleaned coins
(probably 9 out of 10) will be very common 4th century bronzes, often in poor condition.
You may be better off paying $10 and getting one in good condition rather than spending
too much time cleaning coins that turn out to have little or no detail. In the end,
you may end up with a bunch of coins that are pretty much the same. Uncleaned roman
coins are cheap but sometimes it is best to buy partially cleaned Roman coins that
show some detail. You are more likely to be able to attribute them.
